Heel Pain

Heel pain is a common condition in which standing or walking on the heel causes extreme discomfort and pain. This is a common condition that affects both athletes and non athletes alike.

During a preseason game of the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers, Aaron Ross suffered this condition after a punt return during the game at the end of August. Tom Coughlin termed it a "big swollen heel." This is the same condition that affected Eli Manning during last season. The condition that both athlete's suffered from is called plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the plantar fascia).

The plantar fascia is a broad band of fibrous tissue that runs along the bottom surface of the foot. It starts at the heel through the midfoot and into the forefoot. People with flat feet (people who over - pronate) cause the plantar fascia tissue to be excessively stretched and inflamed, resulting in pain in the heel and arch areas of the foot. Commonly, the pain will be most intense first thing in the morning or after a prolonged period of rest. The pain will usually decrease after stretching or walking on your feet.
