Are you having pain in the back of your heel?

Heel pain is a very common problem that podiatrists deal with on a daily basis. There are many different causes of heel pain, and in order to truly understand the source it is always a good idea to see your physician and get a full examination and possibly X-rays. If you are experiencing pain in the back of the heel, it is very possible that you have what's called Haglund's deformity. Sometimes a "bump" appears in the back of your heel and is irritated by a tight Achilles tendon.

There are many causes of a Haglund's deformity. It can be caused by genetics, or sometimes people with excessivley flat feet can have it as well. Symptoms include a lot of pain where your shoe is rubbing on the back of the heel and inflammation of the skin. Conservative treatment may include orhtotics, stretching and proper footwear. However, if the symptoms are serious enough, surgery may be necessary to get rid of the pain.

A podiatrist is the only person that is trained in a specialized field in medicine for anything concerning the lower extremity, foot and ankle, that’s why it is important for you to visit your podiatrist if there are any problems concerning your feet.  In the case of Haglund's deformity it is always good to get it detected and dealt with before it gets out of hand. Sometimes a permanent solution may be necessary.
