The latest National Diabetes Statistic Report said that 9.3 percent of the US population—29.1 million people—had diabetes in 2012 which results in one-quarter of them having foot ulcers. This tells of the importance that Podiatry has in controlling the affects of this vast spreading epidemic called Diabetes.

More than 8,000 amputations are performed on patients with diabetes each year in the US, and almost 50 percent of amputations are preventable.  About 85 percent of all diabetes-related lower extremity amputations are preceded by foot ulcers.

Several doctors have discussed the latest treatment advances for patients with diabetes and the role of podiatry in treating patients. It has been established that podiatrist play a key role in providing proper foot care for those with Diabetes which starts with a annual comprehensive diabetic foot examination. Depending on the findings of the examination, a regular schedule of foot care should established as well.
