Summer Heat and Your Feet

Summer 2013 will bring Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio to the big screen in “The Great Gatsby.”  Brad Pitt will star in “World War Z”, while Johnny Depp will be featured in “The Lone Ranger.”  Escape the heat of the season by stepping into your favorite movie theater, and keep your feet cool with these tips.

Ventilation is key for summer foot comfort, so choose sandals that support your feet and provide this key feature.  Save your flip-flops for the pool where they provide protection from viral and fungal infections.  If you have to wear closed shoes, make sure that your socks are made of a breathable material such as cotton.  Some synthetic socks are made to wick away moisture.

Each foot has over 250,000 sweat glands, and they are vital to cooling your body.  However, all of that perspiration can cause odor, and turn your shoes into bacterial and fungal petri dishes.  One simple trick is to sprinkle baking soda into your favorite footwear.  It will absorb both dampness and odor.  Ideally, your shoes should be allowed to dry between wears.

Basic foot hygiene is important year-round, but especially in the summer.  Take time to wash your feet thoroughly with a non-irritating soap.  Dry the feet well by patting them, and make sure to get in between the toes where bacteria and fungi like to hide.  If you notice symptoms of an infection, such as athlete’s foot, begin treatment immediately.
