What is the lump on the top of my foot?

Many patient come on complaining of a lump or bump on the top of their foot. Some can find it quite irritating especially when trying to wear fashionable shoes. One common cause for a lump is called a ganglion cyst. A ganglion cyst is usually a benign mass that is firm, rubbery and can be quite painful if it gets large enough. Rubbing the lump can sometimes cause it to get bigger.

Ganglion cysts typically affect women, however men can have it as well. Diagnosis is usually done via a history and physical by your podiatrist. In order to be more thorough your doctor may also order a X-Ray or MRI to ensure a complete diagnosis is made. Treatment of the cyst consists of draining the cyst but may require surgery if it is large enough.
