Why are high heels bad for your feet?

Fashionable footwear has been a staple in people's wardrobes for centuries. High heels are very popular among women of all ages. Fun fact, they were originally developed for men in the 19th century to help build calf muscles! However a lot of problems can stem from fashionable and not functional foot wear.

A lot of common pains that come from high heel shoes are in the heel on a tissue called the plantar fascia.  The back of the shoe also causes a lot of irritation on the back of the heel and achilles tendon, also known as a "pump bump." Also, the shape of a high heeled fashionable shoe causes a lot of increased pressure on the forefoot, causing metatarsalgia. Prolonged wear of high heels can also cause bunions due to faulty biomechanics.

A podiatrist is the only person that is trained in a specialized field in medicine for anything concerning the lower extremity, foot and ankle, that’s why it is important for you to visit your podiatrist if there are any problems concerning your feet.  In the case of finding the proper foot wear for you it is always good to get it detected and dealt with before it gets out of hand. Sometimes a permanent solution may be necessary.
