Why are my toenails turning black?

Many patients complain of their toenails changing colors. Sometimes it can be a sign of something more serious such as a vitamin deficiency, other times it can be something like onychomycosis or toenail fungus.  However if a toenail is turning black all of the sudden, it may be due to trauma in the nail bed.

Trauma can happen many different ways, sometimes it may be due to kicking a table leg or dropping something on your toe.  Other times, trauma is due to ill fitting shoes or orthotics.  Still, a toenail suddenly turning black may be a sign of something extremely serious, such as melanoma or skin cancer.

A podiatrist is the only person that is trained in a specialized field in medicine for anything concerning the lower extremity, foot and ankle, that is why it is vital for you to visit your podiatrist if there are any problems concerning your feet. In the case of black toenails, it is always good to have them examined in order to avoid missing anything potentially dangerous, such as melanoma. Please feel free to contact with any questions.
