Manipulative Treatments

Manipulative therapy is known as hands-on care to the patient. It involves using the hands to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness or injury. Your podiatrist will move your muscles and joints using special techniques including stretching, gentle pressure and resistance to aid in recovery of what ails or pains you.

Manipulative therapy has been utilized for many years. Starting in 1931 John Martin Hiss, DO, and MD opened a series of clinics in California, which successfully treated over 300,000 patients. Dr. Hiss believed that comfort varied directly with function. He recognized several foot types prone to problems, and developed a series of manipulative techniques to restore pain free function.

New Jersey podiatrist Dr.Bruce Theall went to California to learn these techniques from Rue Tikker, DPM. Doctor Tikker supervised six of Doctor Hiss' clinics before starting his own practice over 40 years ago. Dr. Theall was trained from the best and practices on his patients with old classical techniques that are still relevant and effective in modern times.

These unusually effective treatments of manipulation of the muscles and joints of the foot and ankle have been overlooked in recent years by most of the medical profession. There movements and effectiveness of the manipulative treatments are more involved when performed with gentle hand motions than traditional physical therapy. There is no discomfort to the patient, only relaxation through technique. They restore a pain free functional foot, within a short period of time. These conservative techniques fit well with Dr. Theall's overall practice philosophy, which is to relieve pain without causing the patient any discomfort or disability.

Problems such as ankle and foot sprains, heel pain, chronic pain, swelling and stiffness, as well as neuromas, are all treated successfully with these manipulative techniques.

Once proper foot function is restored, it is maintained with proper shoes, and functional orthotics when necessary. Call our East Orange office today at 973-673-FOOT (3668) to schedule an appointment with Dr. Bruce Theall.
